San Gabriel Convent

This monastery was built in 1549 by Franciscan monks on the ruins of a temple devoted to Quetzalcóatl.

Conjunto Conventual de San Gabriel

With its atrium wall sporting battlements, the structure looks more like a fortress than a church. The church facade is austere, while the interior astounds with ribbed vaults and paintings depicting the life of St. Francis of Assisi. The Biblioteca Franciscana library can be found at the Portal de Peregrinos, along with a small gallery of religious artwork. The Chapel of the Third Order (Capilla de la Tercera Orden) stands out with its baroque facade and Solomonic columns. Perhaps the most memorable feature, however, is the Capilla Real (also known as Capilla de los Naturales). The space was designed so that visitors can imagine themselves in a distant mosque, under a ceiling of 49 copulas.
