The Main Square is the perfect place to start getting acquainted with Bacalar, surrounded by lovely gardens that are the perfect shady hideout during the hottest hours of the day, accompanied by a cool ice cream. There is a gazebo in the center, and it is ringed by gracious houses painted with vibrant colors. The Cultural Center, with murals and a courtyard surrounded by archways, is one of these. The building is from the 19th century, and it currently hosts art workshops, visual art exhibits, plays, dance shows, and concerts. A stone’s throw away are several shops peddling regional handicrafts: huipil blouses, hammocks, wood carvings, embroidery, textiles, and more.
