Other Buildings

Other important buildings worth a visit are the churches Templo de Santiago Apóstol, erected in the 18th century with a limestone front done in Mudéjar style, and Gothic-style Templo del Señor de Mapimí, built in 1772. And, there is Casa Museo Miguel Hidalgo mansion across from the main square, where the leaders of the Independence movement Miguel Hidalgo, Allende, Aldama, and Jiménez spent the night on their way to Chihuahua before being shot; the Departament of Commerce; the Post Office; and the cemetery, are the settings of several local legends. These tales include “Los Cuatro de a Caballo” (Four Horseback Riders) and “Los Ladrones de Ojuela” (The Thieves from Ojuela). Make sure you visit Antiguo Palacio Nacional, a mansion dating from 1864 that once housed then President Benito Juárez. Today it is the Museo de Historia de Mapimí, the local history museum where the municipality’s most important historical documents are preserved.
