Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Salud

The Basilica was built in the 16th century on top of a Purépechan pyramid. It is home to the region’s patron saint.

Don Vasco de Quiroga ordered its construction to create Michoacán’s first cathedral. The church did not become a cathedral, but the bishop is buried in it. Our Lady of Good Health, the patron saint, embodied in a beautiful image from the 16th century sculpted in corn stalk paste, is worshipped here. Nearby is the Antiguo Colegio de San Nicolás Obispo.

In the surrounding area you can visit the Ex Convento de San Agustín (former convent), the Fuente del Torito (fountain), the San Juan de Dios and San Francisco churches, the Hospitalito (church), and the Santuario de Guadalupe church. You can spend hours exploring them and not see everything.
