Visit the Most Beautiful Chapel in the North of Mexico

After the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, this important hacienda went into private ownership. 

In the 19th century grains and cotton were planted. And at the turn of the century, a tram, train carriage and locomotive factory operated here, which survived until 1924. Of all this, only a few constructions still remain.

One of them is the large house, a pretty, two-story white building, made from adobe, brick and quarry stone. In front of it stands the jewel in the crown of the hacienda, the Capilla de Santa Ana, built in the 18th century, during the Jesuit era.

After decades, it was intervened and restored in 2010 thanks to the organization Adopta una Obra de Arte (Adopt a Work of Art).

The building is full of surprising artistic elements such as its finely sculpted quarry stone facade, it’s dense carved wood door and its thick bell tower.

The interior boasts a dazzling churrigueresque altarpiece at the high altar, among other ornaments, altars and magnificent paintings.

Some of these were created by important artists from the era of the Viceroyalty, such as José Alcíbar and Antonio de Torres. The wooden beam ceiling and its decorative details are equally magnificent.

In conclusion, this is one of the most beautiful churches in the whole of the Mexican north. Seeing it is reason enough for a visit to Viesca.
