Browse the Sunday Market and Soak Up the Traditions
- Website Go to website
Every Sunday—from seven in the morning to six in the afternoon—the tianguis or market takes over Xilitla’s busiest streets selling countless food products and handicrafts. You have to try the town’s most traditional dish: zacahuil. They are enormous tamales that can measure over six feet long. To enjoy this unique delicacy, market-goers gather to share portions while drinking hot cups of atole or delicious coffee. This is also a good place to pick up handicrafts from San Pedro Huitzquilico and amber colored candles.
What to Know
In Miguel Hidalgo Square around two in the afternoon, the Sunday folk dance, called the Huapangueada, starts. The festive celebration of Huapango music brings together children, women, and men to dance and stamp the wooden dance floor—some wearing carnival-like masks, everyone keeping time to the rhythm of the trios.
