Chat to Don Mateo Gaona, a living legend in the town for being the only existing expert in the 49 sones de la Danza de los Quetzales (49 folk songs of the Dance of the Quetzales), and for this reason a candidate for the title of Living Human Treasure from UNESCO.
At 72 years of age, Don Mateo is concerned about the future of this dance. He started dancing when he was 12, and after a year of practice, he began to play the flute and the drum. It took him three years to learn the music and it was only then that his grandfather gave him a role as a musician. Ask him to tell you his story.
