Take a Trip to San Juan Chamula
This town is known for its peculiar religious practices. Christianity in this Tzotzil community is closely tied to pre-Hispanic practices and beliefs. The clearest expression of this faith, which is possible for a traveler to witness, is found inside the town’s church, a building from the time of the Viceroyalty. Inside, light comes into the church from a few windows and the many candles devoted to the dozens of images of saints located in individual glass cabinets along the walls. The faithful pray before these images, presenting their offerings and carrying out their rituals sitting or kneeling on the ground. There are no benches in this church, or altarpieces, or even a communion table. Going inside is a magical, one-of-a-kind experience, the Tzotzil cosmogony will make a deep impact on anyone who witnesses this.
