What Makes It Magical

Tula’s proximity to one of the country’s largest nature reserves makes it the perfect place to spend a few days enjoying its surroundings, admiring its many architectural treasures and handicrafts, and, why not, eating well. The day you try on a locally made leather jacket and sample tulteca enchiladas, you will wonder what you have been doing all your life without them.

Why You Should Go

Reserva de la Biosfera El Cielo

  • This is the first place in Mexico that the government declared a biosphere reserve. It is 558 square miles in all, and is northeastern Mexico’s most important reserve.
  • It harbors four types of vegetation: tropical rainforest, mountainous cloud forest, oak forests, and pine forests. It was formed some 65 million years ago, so don’t be surprised to find fossils of sea life.
  • Many of the 650 butterfly species of northeastern Mexico are found in this reserve with crystal-clear springs.
  • The UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.

At the Very Least

Ride a 4×4 to the Reserva de la Biosfera El Cielo and sleep in a rustic hotel, owned by the cooperative.

Don’t Miss
