What Makes It Magical

Teapa’s first inhabitants were the Zoque people of Mayan descent, and here in the countryside, their legacy remains. This Magical Town in Tabasco is known for being a destination framed by stunning mountains and verdant scenery, where you can lose yourself and get in touch with nature. And if that were not all, it is also famous for being one of the country’s biggest banana producers.

In neighboring small towns, the people craft vine baskets, blanket capes lined with natural rubber, and leather armchairs. Here, precious woods are carved to enliven trunks, chests, and wardrobes.

Why You Should Go

Not only will you fall in love with the gorgeous landscape, you will also be able to soak up one-of-a-kind experiences in this Tabascan town. And, you can get a thrilling adrenaline rush when visiting Grutas de Coconá, a cave system that is a nature reserve and national monument.

At the Very Least

Teapa leads the banana route, as it is one of the top producers nationally. The stars of its cuisine include none, the state’s signature tamal, with pork filled dough steamed in momo (Mexican pepperleaf) and banana leaves. Above all, it is a destination filled with tradition and celebrations.

  • On January 15th, the festival of Señor de Esquipulas is held in his homonymous parish.
  • In April, the Feria Municipal brings color and gaiety to Teapa’s streets as they fill for the town fair.
  • On September 14th the town celebrates the Señor de las Lluvias (Lord of the Rain) festival, in the Santiago Apóstol parish church.
  • November 7th is when the great Gremio Ferrocarrilero celebration is thrown. The train station hosts this celebration of the rail workers association in the Reforma neighborhood.
  • March and April are crowned by the Carnaval Teapaneco, as the carnival is one of the town’s main celebrations.
