The park’s full name is Parque Nacional Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres (National Eastern Coast of Isla Mujeres Park), and it is part of the Gran Arrecife Maya (Great Mayan Reef). This in turn belongs to the Sistema Arrecifal Mesoamericano (Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System), the second-largest barrier reef on earth. Exuberant, prolific, and biodiverse, the reef teems with life: algae, sea grasses, corals, sponges, mollusks, crustaceans, and echinoderms; plus dolphins, fish, and turtles. There is also a wide range of plant species, birds, and crocodiles. This park is a favorite of scuba diving and snorkeling fans.
