Palenque

This large archeological site, with its magnificent buildings and complex and refined art, was once one of the most majestic Mayan cities in history, and it flourished between 600 and 900 A.D. These years were part of the zenith of the Classic period, both within Mayan culture as well as Mesoamerican culture in general. In its center is the Great Plaza, around which several of its main buildings stood. To the east is the Palace, a structure with a rectangular base and four interior patios. To the south is the famous Temple of the Inscriptions and the Temple of the Red Queen. To the east of the Palace is the Conjunto de la Cruz (Group of the Cross) and a little further east, on top of a hill, is the Mirador (viewpoint), which provides astonishing views across the surrounding plains. To the north and northeast of the Great Plaza and the Palace lies the North Group.
