Santa María de la Asunción Church

Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción de Acapetlahuacan

This beautiful, solitary church hides behind the walls of an old Franciscan monastery that now sits in silence. The former monastery is comprised of a church, cloister, dormitories, and garden. Only the church is open to the public. The church facade is Mudejar in style with gothic influences. You’ll see Franciscan iconography and the original wooden door. There is also a pilgrim’s entrance and a line of black tezontle Greek crosses crowning the building. The inside has a ribbed vault nave, as is characteristic of Franciscan monasterial architecture, and a main altarpiece
