One of the peninsula’s oldest convents, ground was broken for it in 1549. The sheer number of artistic details make the Convent of Saint Michael the Archangel impressive, and you should take time to truly appreciate all of it. The exterior is striking for the spacious atrium, door for pilgrims, arcades on the second floor, and above all, the monumental open chapel. Inside are stunning altarpieces, some in gold and others in polychrome. Of these, the ones dedicated to the Passion of Christ, and Saint Anthony of Padua are noteworthy because instead of columns, they have female caryatids stepping on the heads of bearded men. Another unusual piece is the sarcophagus of Christ in repose, guarded by a score of angels.
