If you would like to visit more archeological sites, head to Cobá, 26 miles from Tulum, boasting the Península de Yucatán’s highest pyramid and an astronomical observatory. Just outside you can shop for regional handicrafts, as well as stone calendars, feathers, jewelry, and key chains. To the south of Tulum are the Muyil ruins, with three buildings and explanatory trail that runs through the rainforest to a lagoon with an observation tower providing views of the jungle and the water that changes from green to blue.
