Like something out of an Andersen tale, one day 14 years ago an enchanted forest magically appeared. In the west of Jalisco, biologists Laura González and Alejandra Blanco were studying the state’s migratory birds when they came across something very unusual in the region: a maple tree. Two years later, it would be discovered that the municipality of Talpa de Allende had not just one such tree, but an entire forest.

Among the sacred fir and pine trees, you’ll find this natural paradise where the same species known in Canada grows, as well as giant ferns whose species date from the Pleistocene period. This is the largest maple forest in Latin America and home to numerous plant and animal species you can encounter as you hike the trails.
