Guanajuato

Guanajuato is one of Mexico’s most exceptional states. It is located in the area known as El Bajío, rich in ecosystems that vary from forests to semi-arid zones. It borders with Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Jalisco and Michoacán. Its name comes from the Purépechaword quanaxhuato which means “place of many frogs”. 

The annual average temperature throughout most of the state is 64°F. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the region was inhabited by various indigenous groups, amongst them the Otomíes, Purépechas, Cascanes, Paines, Guamares and Guachichiles, and at the moment the Spanish made contact, the Tarascos had made some territorial gains. 

You will find some of the most beautiful cities from the time of the viceroyalty here, which flourished thanks to the wealth generated from their mines and which, to this day, is one of the most important areas in the country in terms of silver production.
