What Makes it Magical

The Magical Town of Candelaria owes its name to the Río Candelaria which flows through the municipality, and is fundamental to and forms a part of the region’s daily life. It is one of Campeche’s eco-touristic sanctuaries, an oasis where you can enjoy nature. The region’s climate is warm, humid and tropical, which is why its vegetation is dense and abundant.

This is the perfect place for ecological tourism, a method that prioritizes preservation and contemplation of wild environments. Mangrove swamps, grasslands, and abundant tropical vegetation give shape to the natural environment in Candelaria, Campeche.

The archeological site of Itzamkanac, also known as El Tigre, is another one of its attractions along with the region’s Mayan ceremonial centers such as El Naranjo, Peje Lagarto, among others. El Tigre was a very important inland port and natural route between Petén and Campeche’s coast. It covers 2 square miles of hills on the left side of Río Candelaria.

Why You Should Go

  • The El Tigre archeological site has a ceremonial plaza over 650-foot long with two altars in its center and three pyramid bases.
  • Río Candelaria is a river with a strong and abundant flow. It is navigable and the conditions are perfect for practicing water sports.

At the Very Least

On the Río Candelaria, which gives its name to this Magical Town, it is possible to practice different water sports, such as rafting. All along its riverbed are waterfalls that provide perfect areas for quiet contemplation and refreshing dips in the water.
