Located 4.3 miles to the east of downtown San Miguel is Cozumel’s most-visited archeological site. The Spanish recorded that it was a place of worship for Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility, medicine, and love. These days, people cross the waves in canoes and make processions to present offerings to this deity.

The site is composed of a number of architectural complexes joined by a network of sacbés, or white roads. The main complexes are called Manitas (Little Hands), Chichán Nah (Small House), El Álamo (Poplar), Nohoch Nah (Big House), Murciélagos (Bats), Ka’na Nah (High House), and El Ramonal, which is still being studied.
