In 2023, San Pedro was designated as a Magic Neighborhood by the Ministry of Tourism, becoming the Magic Neighborhood in the state of Michoacán.

Magic Neighborhoods is a SECTUR program focused on promoting destinations full of charm, tradition, and mysticism, both in capital cities and the interior of the country. The initiative aims to boost urban areas that are fully identified and delimited.

Because of its dreamy natural spaces, traditions, and the beauty of its historical buildings, this area is now part of Mexico’s Magic Neighborhoods.

What to Do in the Neighborhood of San Pedro

Parque Nacional Barrancas del Cupatitzio

The main attraction of the area is the Parque Nacional Barrancas del Cupatitzio. The Cupatitzio River runs through the neighborhood and continues into this natural space, which is filled with waterfalls, trails, and natural spots.

Stroll through the linear park Las Camelinas, where you’ll cross charming bridges and paths surrounded by forest. The waterfalls La Espumita and La Camelina are some of the sights you’ll encounter along the way.

Centro Cultural Fábrica de San Pedro

The Centro Cultural Fábrica de San Pedro is an iconic building in the neighborhood. For nearly a hundred years, it operated as a textile factory and also served as a prison. It has been transformed into a cultural center housing spaces for art and photography exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events.

Iglesia Santo Santiago

The Iglesia Santo Santiago was built in the 18th century in the Churrigueresque style, which is a classic of that era in New Spain. It is a beautiful building and very photogenic.

Capilla de San Pedro

The oldest church in the area, it was built in the 16th century. Its majesty lies in the simplicity of its construction with materials from the period: adobe with a wooden roof and clay tiles, a stone façade with jambs, and a semicircular arch.

If you visit the neighborhood in April, you will have the opportunity to see the dance of the Aguadoras de San Pedro, women who proudly wear their traditional attire and carry their adorned jugs to the Cupatitzio River.

How to Get to the Magic Neighborhood of San Pedro

To reach Uruapan by car from Paracho, take the Federal Highway 37 South. After forty kilometers, you will arrive in Uruapan. San Pedro is located in the central part of the city, next to the historic center.

You can take buses to Uruapan from Morelia, Pátzcuaro, and the main cities of Michoacán.

Francisco Márquez Street is the main access road to the Magic Neighborhood of San Pedro.
